The Terramar Festival and the Gaudí Year: The Same Cultural DNA

The Terramar CaixaBank Festival in Sitges is rooted in the same land where Catalan Modernism flourished. In the last decade of the 19th century, Santiago Rusiñol turned Sitges into the mecca of Modernism thanks to the Cau Ferrat and the Modernist Festivals. From that cultural impulse was also born the Terramar Gardens project, designed by Miquel Utrillo—a Modernist agitator, promoter of the Maricel Palace, and close friend of Rusiñol—as the green heart of a Mediterranean urban dream. The first garden city in Catalonia was conceived as a space of modernity, intellectuality, and the renewal of artistic languages, values that the Festival has inherited and brings to life every summer.

In 2026, a hundred years after the death of Antoni Gaudí—on June 10, 1926—we look back at that founding moment. Gaudí and Rusiñol were contemporaries of the same movement, of the same Barcelona bubbling with creativity. Modernism was not limited to architecture: Rusiñol contributed to the movement with paintings and posters that captured the spirit of the time, and he organized the Modernist Festivals in Sitges—festivals combining theater, poetry, painting, and music—which are still celebrated today. The Terramar Festival is, in a way, the living legacy of that idea. The conviction that culture is a total act—that music, the arts, and the landscape cannot be understood separately—is the same one that the Terramar CaixaBank Festival embraces every summer in the gardens where it all began.

The Gaudí Crypt, near Sitges

In the Baix Llobregat region, just a few kilometers from the Terramar Gardens, stands the Crypt of the Colònia Güell in Santa Coloma de Cervelló. Built between 1908 and 1915, it is considered the structural laboratory where Gaudí experimented with the solutions he would apply years later to the Sagrada Família: brick vaults, leaning columns, and organic integration with the landscape. It is part of the “Works of Antoni Gaudí” site, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
